The history of this tournament dates back to the 1955-56 season, and it was called Champion Clubs’ Cup up until the 1991-92 season. According to the UEFA official site, the 1991-92 season was the last year of the European Cup.
Subsequently it was decided to modify the tournament and its format and turndown the customary knockout system. During this period, the tournament got its official anthem and logo. Since the 1992-93 season, it has got its eventual name. 22 team have won the trophy, 12 of them have managed to win it more than once. An interesting fact is that Spanish teams have won the cup for 15 times. Real Madrid is the most successful club in the Champions League history and has won it for ten times.
The reigning champion of the tournament is Barcelona, who defeated Juventus with a lopsided score 3-1. Any team hasn’t managed to win the Champions League twice in a row; only Real Madrid has won the first five European Cups in the 1955-60 seasons. Since then this record has remained unbeaten.
